What is the best age to see an orthodontist?
Though an orthodontist can enhance a smile at any age, the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends that the initial orthodontic evaluation should occur at the first sign of orthodontic problems or no later than age 7. At this early age, orthodontic treatment may not be necessary, but a thorough examination can anticipate the most advantageous time to begin treatment. Beginning treatment at this time ensures the greatest result and the least amount of time and expense.
Phase 1
 |
 |
Phase I is designed to create space for patients who show excessive crowding or other orthodontic bite problems at an early age. Phase I creates room for all the permanent teeth to come in without extractions or getting “stuck” in the mouth. Phase I is also designed to improve cross bites, overbites or underbites. Treating this early can help guide jaw growth that might take longer if treated later.
Planning now can save your smile later
Children benefit tremendously from early phase treatment. Receiving early treatment may prevent the removal of permanent teeth later in life, or the need for surgical procedures to realign the jaws.

Making records to determine your unique treatment
Orthodontic records will be necessary to determine the type of appliances to be used, the duration of treatment time, and the frequency of visits. Records consist of a panorex and photographs. During your child's initial consultation, we will take records to determine if early treatment is necessary.
Phase 2
 |
 |
The goal of the second phase is to make sure each tooth has an exact location in the mouth where it is in harmony with the lips, cheeks, tongue, and other teeth. When this equilibrium is established, the teeth will function together properly. Phase-two usually involves full upper and lower braces.
At the beginning of the first phase, orthodontic records were made and a diagnosis and treatment plan was established. The second phase begins when all permanent teeth have erupted, and usually requires braces or Invisalign on all the teeth for an average of 12-18 months. Retainers are worn after this phase to ensure you retain your beautiful smile.
